Like the rest of Japan, Osaka is affected by the monsoon circulation; in winter the northwest cold currents will prevail, while in summer they will be replaced by hot and humid currents of tropical origin.

Osaka weather by the season

Warm and appealing for much of the year, the climate in Osaka varies noticeably from season to season. Osaka is located on the coast, on the Seto Inland Sea; this area is relatively protected, both, from the summer monsoon and from typhoons.

During winter, you can expect temperatures to hover around 10°C. Summer brings highs of 35°C and a fairly humid and muggy weather. The wettest month is June, with an average of 230mm of rain. The best month to swim in the sea is August, when the average sea temperature is 28°C.

Winter in Osaka

Temperatures in winter rarely drop below zero. There can be fairly mild periods, with highs above 10°Cby day, alternating with cold periods, with wind and rain or possibly sleet or snow, with highs around 5-7°C or less.

On average, it only rains or snows 7 or 8 days per month. Enjoy average sunshine hours of 5 and average rainfall of 30-70 mm.

Winter season, from December to February, is cold but not too cold for traveling. This time of year is the slowest with tourists. Still, by booking hotels early, you avoid higher prices and less choice during New Year and the Toka Ebisu festival in mid-January.

Spring in Osaka

Spring in Osaka usually begins in March and lasts through May. You can enjoy average sunshine hours of 6 and explore the city in warm weather. One of the best parts of spring is definitely the cherry trees. They bloom in parks, on roadsides, on the mountains and along the riverside.

The temperatures are also very pleasant in spring, rising considerably as the season progresses. The combination of humidity and temperature make this season feel moderate. Temperatures range from 26.2°C to 12.3°C, with warmer temperatures in the later months.

Rain is somewhat common, with an average of 10 to 12 days of significant precipitation per month. Spring is the busiest season for tourism, which makes it a good time for those looking for things to do.

Summer in Osaka

Summer in Osaka begins in June and lasts to mid-September. Summers are particularly hot and humid, but there can be periods of good weather too. In summer, the highest temperature will be around 36⁰C and the lowest will be around 25⁰C.

The summer daytime temperatures fluctuate quite a bit, between hot and very hot. August is the hottest month, with temperatures hitting 37⁰C sometimes. The nights do cool off a little though, so you can sleep comfortably. There is a fair bit of rain too, particularly in June, which isn’t the best time to visit Osaka if you don’t like rough weather.

June to August is fairly slow for tourism in Osaka, so prices for accommodation may be slightly lower. This is the perfect time if you want to avoid the crowds.

Autumn in Osaka

Japan might be famous for its cherry blossom in spring, but the autumn colors are pretty special too. At this time of year the gingko trees and other trees turn to shades of yellow, orange and red, before falling to the ground.

To celebrate its beauty, in mid-October there is the Midosuji Parade down the main street of Osaka, Midosuji Avenue. Autumn is a very pleasant time of year to visit Osaka, apart from the rain in October.

Autumn daily temperatures range from 31.1°C to 15.3°C, which will feel very nice given the humidity and wind. It rains a significant amount: 8 to 11 days per month. Tourism is the second busiest during these months due to the nice weather, so hotels may be slightly higher priced.

Rainfall

The rains are quite abundant, as they amount to 1300mm per year; the wettest month being June. There are many sunny days in May, but toward the month, the rainy season begins. However, it doesn’t usually rain every day (afternoon showers are common in the rainy season).

The rainy season lasts into July and it is usually hot and humid with frequent rains. That said, it’s possible to travel in Osaka in July and it’s not crowded. The rainy season ends by the end of the month, and then it becomes sunny, hot and humid.

Typhoons

Rainfall in Osaka is more frequent from March through October. This includes the rainy season in June-July and the typhoon peak season in August-September. However, the rainfall in the typhoon peak season in Osaka is much less than in Tokyo and Yokohama.

This shows that Osaka ismuch less influenced by the typhoon than Tokyo and Yokohama, resulting in less natural disaster than any other parts of Japan.

If a typhoon is approaching, the two most important things to know are its strength and projected route. During typhoons, whether in the countryside or city, there is a high potential for heavy winds and rains that make even the sturdiest of umbrellas collapse. It is recommended to bring waterproof gear if you are travelling in this season.

Best time to visit Osaka

Osaka is truly a year-round destination. Winter offers amazing seafood, incredible onsen (hot springs) experiences, not to mention some of the best powder snow in the world for skiing and snowboarding.

Spring is famous for the cherry blossom, and if you’re lucky (and don’t mind the crowds), you may experience hanami (cherry-blossom viewing) in all its glory.

Summer is the most festive time of year, with colorful matsuri (festivals) throughout the country, the chance to hike in the Japan Alps, and lovely coastal areas where you can enjoy the sea.

Fall is another magical (and popular) time of year, with brilliant autumn colors and incredibly pleasant temperatures.

The busiest month for tourism in Osaka is May, followed by October and March. Prices for hotels and flights will be the highest during these months, though you can save if you purchase well in advance. Tourists are unlikely to visit Osaka in July. Those willing to visit at thattime will likely find it the least expensive month.

Thus, our honest recommendation is to take advantage of any chance to visit, since each of Osaka’s seasons is great in its own way!
